HR Services Assistant Director to Retire

Small notebook with TASB HR Services logo and text reading: Happy Retirement, April!

TASB HR Services assistant director April Mabry is set to retire on Nov. 7 after nearly 35 years of service to public education.

In April 1991, the federal minimum wage increased from $3.80 to $4.25 per hour, the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) was still two years away from being signed into law, and April Mabry embarked on a new career with the Texas Association of School Boards.

April came to TASB with experience as an elementary school teacher. At the time, TASB HR Services was a small, newly formed department. In the years that followed, April became well known in the education HR world as an expert about all things related to administering leave.

Countless HR Services members have received guidance from April — by phone, by email, or by attending her workshops and presentations. At TASB events or events with a collaborating association, attendees often approached the HR Services booth with, “Is April here?” People wanted to meet the person who had helped them so much.

April’s knowledge and leadership was recognized within TASB with a promotion to assistant director of HR Services in April 2012.

Solidifying her legacy, April built and maintained the HR Services Resource Library. Her research and attention to detail have made the model employee handbooks, model job descriptions, and HR library files invaluable resources to members and TASB staff alike. Her collaboration with other divisions produced high-quality, legally sound, and desperately needed resources and training topics.

Over her decades-long career, April was instrumental in building HR Services’ reputation for providing sound, reliable, and timely support to members.

Those who would like to wish her well can contact April through her TASB email address through Friday, Nov. 7.
