The Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) is a voluntary, nonprofit, nonpartisan, statewide educational association established in 1949 to serve local Texas school boards — the largest group of publicly elected officials in the state with more than 7,000 school board trustees.
Our Mission
The Texas Association of School Boards promotes educational excellence for Texas schoolchildren through the advancement of good governance, valuable learning experiences for school leaders, and public school advocacy. We also provide high-quality services and programs to school districts — helping them operate more efficiently and effectively.
This simple but powerful statement highlights our absolute commitment to building a stronger future for Texas through public education. First adopted by the 1996 Delegate Assembly in 1996, the Mission was updated by the 2025 Delegate Assembly (Sept. 13, 2025) to articulate TASB's work supporting Texas school boards and the districts and students they serve.
Cornerstone Principles
The Cornerstone Principles communicate the core beliefs of the Association and contain associated advocacy statements that serve as foundational building blocks of TASB's Advocacy Agenda.
The Cornerstone Principles were adopted by the TASB Delegate Assembly on Sept. 13, 2025.

A Name You Trust
TASB has 75 years of experience with Texas public schools and provides assistance in all areas of public-school governance and operation with high-quality solutions and services designed to support the critical work of educating the millions of public schoolchildren in our state.
Supporting Schools and Communities
Here at TASB, we believe deeply in the tradition of local governance, with elected school board members best equipped to chart the future of Texas public schools.
The initial focuses of TASB — advocacy, training, and information resources — are as important today as they were in the beginning. And as schools have had to respond to inevitable challenges, so has TASB responded with innovative solutions and services that seek to minimize the operational burdens of government and keep taxpayer resources for the benefit of local schools and their communities. Besides legal, policy, and human resources support, member school boards have access to risk management services, investment and insurance assistance, a purchasing cooperative, an energy cooperative, facility services, special population consulting, and more.
Strength in Numbers
For decades, nearly all school boards in Texas have been active members of TASB — giving us the opportunity to coalesce and amplify school trustees’ voices across the state. Our longstanding membership rate is the result of keeping the needs of school boards — and their districts — at the heart of everything we do.
We also offer Active Membership to education service center boards and Associate and Affiliate Membership opportunities for community colleges, central appraisal districts, and some public-school charters. At TASB, you’ll find strength in numbers, knowing we’re all working to ensure a brighter future for our state through stronger schools and communities.
Member Focused. Member Led.
As a nonprofit member association, TASB is committed to the needs of those we serve with leadership and oversight from an elected 40-member board of directors, made up of school board members who represent every area of the state. This board meets four times a year and works with TASB administrators to provide strategic and fiscal leadership. Our governance structure provides accountability, accessibility, responsive decision-making, and financial oversight to ensure alignment with member needs and priorities.
