Update: TRS Surcharges for Rehired Retirees

The law preventing employers from passing on Teacher Retirement System (TRS) surcharges to rehired retirees was repealed in House Bill (HB) 2 of the 89th Regular Legislative session.

Beginning with the 2025-2026 school year, districts and colleges may require rehired retirees to assume the cost of TRS surcharges. Information in the HR Services Resource Library (member login required) has been updated to reflect this change. The updated resources include:
