Trustees Need To Take TEA Parental Rights Training by Sept. 1

New training from the Texas Education Agency on parental rights is now available, and school board trustees must act quickly to complete it.

As part of Senate Bill 204, TEA and the State Board of Education developed the training and handbook to help trustees gain an understanding of legal rights afforded to parents, and the trustees’ role in supporting and respecting them. Trustees who took their oath of office before Jan. 1 have until Sept. 1 to finish the five-hour course via the TEA Learn platform.

“Trustees don’t have long to complete this training, but TASB is here to help answer any questions,” said Mark Tilley, TASB Legal Services division director. “The topics covered provide trustees with an understanding of how parental rights apply to their governance responsibilities.”

Newly elected or appointed trustees have 120 days from the day they take office to do the training.

TASB Legal Services is available through its Legal Line to help districts understand and implement these requirements effectively. Calls are answered from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. most business days, toll-free, at 800-580-5345 .
