Patrick Announces Additional Interim Charges

Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick has unveiled another seven interim charges that he would like senate committees to consider before next session. The topics of the charges range from religious liberty issues to management of the Pecos River Basin.

Specifically related to schools, one charge directs the Senate Committee on Religious Liberty to monitor implementation of Senate Bill 1049 from last session. The bill allows students excused absences for up to five hours per week to participate in religious instruction courses provided by private entities.

Interim charges are important because they direct committees to study various issues. That work often includes public hearings during which members of the public have opportunities to weigh in on the issues. After those hearings, committee members produce an interim report with suggestions that often become legislation during the next session.
