TASB Recognizes 50 Journalists for Elevating Texas Public Education Stories
Austin— The Texas Association of School Boards is pleased to announce the selection of 50 journalists for the 2026 TASB Media Honor Roll. This program recognizes Texas journalists for fair, accurate, and balanced reporting on public education. Honorees represent newspapers, radio, television, and digital outlets and are selected by their local school districts.
Districts base their selections on a journalist’s efforts to build strong working relationships with the superintendent, board president, and district leadership, as well as a demonstrated commitment to covering campus and district events.
“Public education thrives when communities understand what’s happening inside our schools,” said TASB Executive Director Dan Troxell. “These journalists take the time to report with context, ask thoughtful questions, and tell the full story of the challenges and successes shaping our students’ experiences.”
TASB President Tony Hopkins, board president of Friendswood ISD, said the program emphasizes the essential role of local media in connecting communities to schools.
“Local reporting helps community members stay informed and engaged,” Hopkins said. “When journalists consistently show up to board meetings, campuses, and student events, they help ensure that the stories that matter most are seen, heard, and understood.”
Throughout the month of May, school boards are adopting resolutions and presenting personalized certificates to honor their selected journalists.
