The program is composed of multiple sessions held among a cohort group. Class members are selected based on a number of criteria, including demonstrated leadership in their local district and communities, commitment to board service as a means of improving student performance, and levels and types of participation in school board-related activities outside the local district (TASB activities, area association activities, etc.)

Traditionally the year-long program consists of five weekend sessions lasting two-to-three days each. The program begins at the TASA/TASB Convention and concludes at Summer Leadership Institute. Leadership TASB provides participants with an in-depth exploration of leadership skills through immersive experiences designed to inform and engage education leaders as they continue setting and achieving high expectations, thereby leading to better educational outcomes for all Texas public school students.
