Fall Legal Seminars

Attend the Fall Legal Seminars to get the latest legal updates and five hours of TEA-approved training credit. The topics this November include:
Into the Great Wide Open Meetings Act: An Overview of Open Meetings Laws for Trustees
Even the most experienced board members find they have questions about the Texas Open Meetings Act. This interactive session is your opportunity to learn and ask questions about the OMA. TASB attorneys will address agendas, minutes, public comment, voting, and closed meetings.
Money, Money, Money: Compensation and Other Board Staffing Decisions
This presentation covers your most pressing school district personnel questions, including the board’s role in compensation decisions, hiring, termination, and the newest personnel-related laws from the most recent legislative session.
Takin’ Care of Business: The Board’s Role in Business Decisions
School board members oversee district management and are involved in a number of school business activities. Board members must also know and understand applicable conflict of interest laws. This session will cover some of the board’s most important business-related responsibilities, including budgeting, construction, purchasing, and conflicts of interest.
We are Family: Parents’ Rights in Texas Schools
Federal and state laws offer significant legal protections for parents wishing to collaborate with school districts on their children’s education. This session will discuss laws that govern how districts address parental rights. A TASB Legal Services attorney will cover topics including instructional materials, library books, exemption requests, and grievances.
Times They Are a-Changin’: An Overview of New Laws and Cases
This legal presentation is informative, and maybe a little bit fun. Learn a lot (and laugh a little) while hearing about the 2025 legislative changes and other legal news. This session is offered as the mandatory legislative update or 1.5 hours of continuing education credit.
