• Texas Education Agency (TEA) is the administrative agency that provides guidance and monitors activities and programs related to primary and secondary public education in Texas; TEA is managed by the commissioner of education.
• The State Board of Education (SBOE) is an elected statewide board composed of 15 members with rulemaking authority over primary and secondary public education in Texas, including setting educational policy and standards, designating required knowledge and skills in curriculum, determining passing scores for the state-mandated assessment program, overseeing the investment of the Permanent School Fund, approving the creation of charter schools, and adopting standards for the operation of adult education programs. 
• Texas' Education Service Centers (ESCs), also referred to as regional service centers, each serve one of 20 regions of the state by providing districts educational support, such as teacher training, curriculum assistance, technology support, and aid in complying with federal and state requirements:

• The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) is a state administrative board composed of nine members appointed by the governor to serve as the rulemaking authority for higher education, including P-16 initiatives; the board appoints the commissioner of higher education to fulfill various administrative and statutory duties.
• The U.S. Department of Education establishes policies related to federal education funding; distributes the funds and monitors their use; collects data and oversees research on the nation's schools; brings attention to major issues in education; and through the Office for Civil Rights, enforces federal laws prohibiting discrimination in programs that receive federal funds.
