DPS Implements CDL Waiver

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) announced Texas will implement a waiver for commercial driver license (CDL) applicants seeking to operate a school bus.

The waiver, effective January 24, 2022, is intended to aid in the recruitment of school bus drivers, of which there is a severe shortage. Texas will waive the engine compartment component of the pre-trip vehicle inspection skills test for CDL applicants seeking the School Bus (S) and Passenger (P) endorsement. All other components, including basic controls and road test, must still be completed.

The waiver is set to expire March 31, 2022. More details are available on the DPS website and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Newsroom.
