Job Openings Continue to Outpace Job Seekers

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) posted a news release last week revealing a rise in job openings across the nation in January, marking the 11th consecutive month the number of openings was higher than the number of job seekers.

Job openings increased the most in the following industries to start out the year:

  • wholesale trade (+91,000)
  • real estate and rental and leasing (+60,000)
  • information (+42,000).

Conversely, job opening decreased significantly in the following areas:

  • other services (-98,000)
  • retail trade (-97,000)
  • arts, entertainment, and recreation (-40,000)

In state and local education, the number of job openings increased from 163,000 in December 2018 to 166,000 in January 2019. In January 2018, the number was up to 173,000.
