Our Future Is Public

Texas public schools offer families the most choices and the best outcomes. Be part of the reason Texas families choose public education — now and in the future.

Now is the time to tell the success stories of Texas public education, and there are no stronger champions for our public schools than the more than 7,000 elected school board members who provide leadership, governance, and advocacy.

Our Future is Public is a campaign designed to help trustees and the communities they represent amplify the success stories happening in their own districts — and spread the word about the power of public education.

Here’s Why Our Future Is Public

The Texas public education system is the second largest in the country, with 5.5 million students and 1,200 school districts, representing some 8,600 campuses and 375,000 teachers.

These public schools are educating the future of Texas, including a workforce critical to the success of the state’s economy, which ranks 8th globally and surpasses the economies of some countries, including Canada, Russia, and Italy.

To continue growing and thriving, Texas needs skilled K-12 graduates prepared to take on opportunities in the workplace, the military or in higher education. Even with the passage of school vouchers in Texas, there is not enough capacity in the private sector to educate the many millions of students already in Lone Star classrooms.

With that fact in mind, Texas public schools have an opportunity to make their case for why a public education offers the best access to a full portfolio of no-tuition programs such as athletics, performing and visual arts, extracurricular activities, industry certifications, and in many cases, the option to participate in dual credit programs that help families save on college expenses.
