SBOE Meeting Agenda: June 2026

GR Updates SBOE News

The State Board of Education (SBOE) will meet Monday, June 22 - Friday, June 26. On Monday, members will consider final adoption of the K-5, 6-8, and high school literary works lists. TEA has reported that there will be fiscal implications for school districts and charter schools related to the purchase of literary works, professional development, and revisions to district-developed curriculum.

TASB Governmental Relations submitted public comments to the SBOE asking for clarity regarding the implementation timeline for the new literary works. No dedicated funding has been appropriated for the purchase of the new required items. View the comments.

The board will also consider final adoption of Social Studies TEKS and will discuss the proposed TEKS for English Language Arts and Reading Vocabulary Lists for each grade level.

On Tuesday, the Board will receive an update from Commissioner Mike Morath on the Instructional Materials Review and Approval (IMRA) Cycle 2025 confirmation of changes and potential actions against publishers that failed to make required changes or introduced new errors when making changes. The SBOE has a duty to review instructional materials that have been provided to the Board and is required to determine that the material is free from factual error and suitable for each grade level.

On Wednesday, the Commissioner will provide an update to the Board on agency operations and public education-related legislation. The Board will also have an opportunity to review and take action on Generation 31 Open-Enrollment Charter School Proposals. Commissioner Morath approved only one charter application this cycle: Texas High School for Accelerated Learning (THSAL). View the list of the five charter school applications that met the scoring criteria.

On Thursday, the SBOE Committee on School Initiatives will receive updates on the Generation 32 Open Enrollment Charter Application cycle and will consider approval of revisions to required School Safety Training for School District Trustees. This training has been updated to incorporate recently passed legislation related to school safety. The committee, as part of a state-mandated review, will also take public testimony on rules establishing the continuing-education and training requirements for trustees.
