New Hire Reporting

As part of the new hire process, it’s important to report new hire information for all new hires and rehires to the Texas Office of the Attorney General.

Educational employers typically hire and process a large number of new employees each year. It’s important to review new hire processes for all employee groups, identify who has responsibility for reporting, and ensure it is done in a timely manner.

All employers are required to report certain new hire information to the Texas Office of the Attorney General for submission to the National Directory of New Hires, including:

  • Employee name
  • Employee address
  • Employee Social Security number
  • Employee date of hire

Reported information is used to facilitate child support enforcement and prevent fraud in public assistance, unemployment benefits, and workers’ compensation programs.

Information for all new workers — including temporary employees, substitute teachers, independent contractors, and former employees who have been rehired — must be reported within 20 calendar days from the date the employee starts earning wages.

Visit the Texas Attorney General Office Employer Portal to report new hires.

Additional information is available on the Attorney General website and in the HR Services Resource Library (member login required):
