Discover TASB's New Local Legislative Priorities Tool

TASB is pleased to announce the availability of a new member benefit. The Local Legislative Priorities tool is now live on the tasb.org dashboards for board members, superintendents, assistant superintendents, board secretaries, and superintendent secretaries.

This is a phased project with the first iteration of this tool designed to display those TASB members with publicly available legislative priorities — using a heat map representation.

“The goal is to increase visibility of local legislative priorities to spark collaboration, connection, and peer learning, especially among districts that may have similar concerns,” said TASB Executive Director Dan Troxell. “For those trustees attending our Grassroots Meetings in the next couple months, you’ll hear more about this tool, as well as the importance of all school boards establishing their own local legislative priorities as a way to get even more engaged in Texas public education advocacy.”

By establishing local legislative priorities, school boards have a clear framework for conversations with their elected officials and their families about what matters most to their students and school communities. Additionally, these local legislative priorities allow districts to establish and collaborate on initiatives that go beyond TASB’s Advocacy Agenda, which represents the association-wide legislative program. The Advocacy Agenda, developed at 20 regional Grassroots Advocacy events and voted on at the annual Delegate Assembly, represents the shared legislative intentions of all our member districts. TASB encourages all members to participate in these meetings and to attend Delegate Assembly at txEDCON to be part of that agenda-setting process.

To access the tool, trustees and superintendents should log into tasb.org, which will bring up the member dashboard. To navigate from there, click the Advocacy section, which includes the link to the new Local Legislative Priorities tool.

The tool currently allows those with access to filter by region, district, community, enrollment, as well as by state lawmakers in either the House or Senate. Also visible are links to the publicly available legislative priorities in the table on the right of the report. Additional enhancements will be available later this year.

“We’re hoping one impact of this project is to encourage more school boards to take the time to establish local legislative priorities, especially ahead of the next Legislative Session, which opens in January 2027,” Troxell said. “It will be powerful to see all the points of shared concern among our members and help us as an Association connect the dots with relevant and timely support.”
