Trustees Adopt Legislative Priorities, Learn About Local Priorities
Trustees from around the state met in Houston last week to adopt TASB’s Advocacy Agenda and learned from three districts about their process for adopting local legislative priorities.
The 2026-28 TASB Advocacy Agenda will direct TASB’s legislative efforts during the 90th legislative session, which begins in January. The new priorities are the result of 21 TASB Grassroots Meetings held around the state earlier this year that were crafted into a statewide agenda by the TASB Legislative Advisory Council comprised of trustees elected at those regional meetings.
The new priorities adopted by the Delegate Assembly ask the Legislature to address:
- School safety and security
- Special education
- Teacher and staff recruitment and retention
- Local control of school districts
- School accountability and assessments
- Streamlining of statute and rules
- Comparable transparency and accountability across all schools receiving public funds
- Increased investment in public schools
Each priority includes specific requests that LAC pulled from regional priorities or developed during its meetings in the spring. Read the adopted priorities, which will remain in effect until the end of the 2028 Delegate Assembly.
Before trustees voted on the priorities at Delegate Assembly, they heard how three different districts adopted their own local legislative priorities. School board members from Crosby ISD, Lake Travis ISD, and Pecos-Barstow Toyah ISD sat on a panel to discuss how they developed their local agendas, what they mean for their communities, and how they have shared them with stakeholders.
Watch the three videos highlighting these districts.
Their priorities and those of many other districts can be found on the updated Local Legislative Priorities Tool available on your member dashboard after logging into the TASB website.
