TASB Policy Service recently published an update regarding staff development changes required by Senate Bill (SB) 1267 (87th Regular Session).
While most of the changes noted in SB 1267 took effect in the 2021–2022 school year, the following requirements are slated for implementation by summer 2022:
- The State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) must publish a professional development clearinghouse by June 1, 2022.
- School districts must adopt a professional development policy, guided by the clearinghouse, by August 1, 2022.
Some concern has arisen that SBEC may not meet the June 1 deadline to publish the professional development clearinghouse. TASB Policy Service will recommend in Update 119 that districts add provisions at DMA(LOCAL) to meet the requirements of SB 1267. Districts should make every effort to adopt DMA(LOCAL) and approve a professional development plan by August 1, 2022, as required by SB 1267.
Policy Service notes that the clearinghouse is intended to streamline professional development requirements, not add to them.
