A drop in teacher preparation program enrollment nationwide may result in a teacher shortage, but a lack of detailed enrollment data leaves question marks about how to fix the problem.
In a recent report, the Center for American Progress reveals that teacher preparation programs have experienced a decline of more than one third from 2010 to 2018 regardless of the fact that more students are pursuing bachelor’s degrees. The decline in enrollment parallels a decline in the number of students who completed a teacher preparation program. In contrast, alternative certification programs not based at institutes of higher education experienced an enrollment surge of more than 40 percent between 2010 and 2018.
