TRS Awards New Medical Plan Contracts

The Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) trustees have selected medical plan administrators for TRS-ActiveCare and TRS-Care.

TRS-ActiveCare and TRS-Care Standard will be administered by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX). TRS-Care Medicare Advantage will be administered by United Healthcare (UHC). The new contracts are expected to save $754 million over the next three to five years, improving the position of the TRS trust funds.

The transition dates are as follows:

  • TRS-ActiveCare to BCBSTX effective September 1, 2020
  • TRS-Care plans to BCBSTX and UHC effective January 1, 2021
