State Board of Education Set to Meet
The Texas State Board of Education (SBOE) will gather in Austin for their regularly scheduled meeting Sept. 10-13.
One issue to be discussed is that of school board training and the prevention of convicted felons from registering as trainers. In an effort to close a loophole in SBOE rules, Member Will Metcalf (R-Houston) has offered language to exclude individuals convicted of a felony from being able to register with the Texas Education Agency as providers of continuing education credit for school trustees. During discussion of this topic in a previous meeting, Members Julie Pickren (R-Pearland) and Audrey Young (R-Trinity) indicated they would like additional measures considered and are expected to bring those forward soon.
The board will consider the approved and rejected instructional materials list (New 19 TAC Chapter 67) as required by HB 1605 on second reading and then hold a vote for final adoption. If approved, these items will be eligible for HB 1605 funding for the 2025-26 school year.
The action agenda for the meeting is posted on the SBOE website.
