The search for your district’s next leader is an important task requiring thought and planning. As you begin this process, you may have many questions about the search process, what to expect, and how to manage it effectively. Whether you’re wondering how long a search might take, whether a site visit will be required, or how the staff and community will be involved, TASB Executive Search Services has compiled the information contained in this FAQ to provide answers to your most pressing questions.

How do you conduct a background search?

At TASB Executive Search Services we take the vetting process seriously, gathering critical candidate information so that the district's we serve can feel confident that they are getting the best candidates for their leadership roles. As standard operating procedure, we contact references and send reference questionnaires – once applicants are chosen for the second and final round of interviews. As every district is different, your consultant will work with you to recommend the best options for vetting candidates. For districts requiring a formal criminal background check, ESS may recommend a third-party provider that will conduct an extensive background check, which includes, state, national, and social media/online checks. Districts work with the third-party provider directly at their expense.

What is your success record?

Since 1988, Executive Search Services consultants have conducted more than 700 searches for districts ranging in size from those with less than 100 students to those with more than 194,000 students. And our placements are successful: After five years, more than 90% of the superintendents ESS placed are still at their districts.

In many of the districts we've worked with, we have conducted multiple searches, which is a testament to our record. After each search, we ask each trustee of an employing board to evaluate the search process and provide us with feedback. We evaluate that feedback to ensure we are providing districts with the most effective and efficient search processes possible. Over the years, we have received very positive reviews and have built and maintained great relationships with many of the districts we’ve had the pleasure of working with.
