Summer Leadership Institute happening next month

Registration and housing are open for TASB's Summer Leadership Institute (SLI), taking place in San Antonio June 14-17 and in Fort Worth June 21-24. This year’s conference kicks off with Evaluating and Improving Student Outcomes on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday will include inspiring keynote sessions and more than 90 breakouts focused on a variety of topics including Chat GPT, school finance, and school safety. TASB’s Post-Legislative Conference will take place on Saturday. SLI offers plenty of great learning opportunities and attendees will leave the conference with the tools and information needed to successfully lead and advocate for their students and community.

Submit Advocacy Resolutions by June 15

It’s up to local school boards to share their voice to help form TASB’s response to issues before the Legislature and other governmental entities. Boards are invited to submit new Advocacy Resolutions to be added to the current Advocacy Agenda, TASB's legislative action plan. The 2023 TASB Delegate Assembly will have the opportunity to amend the current Advocacy Agenda in September. Learn more about the process for submitting an Advocacy Resolution

Delegate Assembly scheduled for Sept. 30

TASB's annual business meeting, Delegate Assembly, is where the Association's Advocacy Agenda is approved each year. The meeting will take place Sept. 30 during txEDCON23 TASA | TASB Convention. Your school board may appoint one delegate and one alternate to serve as your representatives. Start planning now and register your board’s delegate and alternate.

Nominations open for TASB Board

Local school boards can nominate a trustee for a vacancy or expiring position on the TASB Board of Directors. Local board action is required. Nominations are due June 30, and the endorsement period is July 3-Aug. 29. See the open board positions and learn more

Welcome, new school board members!

School trustees can find an immersive learning experience specifically designed for first-year board members by signing up for the Texas Trustee Institute. Participants will benefit from in-person development opportunities, a networking cohort, and must-have training opportunities. The next Trustee Institute will take place during Summer Leadership Institute, June 14-17 in San Antonio and June 21-24 in Fort Worth. 

Leadership TASB accepting applications for Class of 2024

Leadership TASB is a yearlong development program designed to take experienced board members to a new level of service and leadership while exposing them to a variety of issues, people, activities, and locations. Leadership TASB participants will tour successful schools and learn about innovative programs. Applications for the class of 2024 will be accepted through July 1.​

Don't forget: Share your feedback on Convention sessions

If you plan to attend txEDCON23 this fall, be sure to share your feedback on potential sessions by May 19. Board members and administrators should have received an email invitation to participate. The TASA | TASB Convention will take place Sept. 29-Oct. 1 in Dallas.

Fund Excellence Awards deadline June 2

The TASB Risk Management Fund Excellence Awards program recognizes school districts, community colleges, and education service centers that implement solutions to their risk management challenges. Award recipients will receive a $1,000 honorarium, a commemorative plaque, and recognition in TASB and Fund publications. Apply for an Excellence Award by June 2

Texas Teacher of the Year selection process

The process for naming the 2024 Texas Teacher of the Year is officially underway. Texas school districts first conduct their own local selection processes to choose their district elementary and secondary Teachers of the Year. District winners must then be submitted to regional ESCs by June 1. The Texas Association of School Administrators annually recognizes and rewards teachers who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and excellence in teaching.The 2024 Texas Teacher of the Year will be announced Oct. 20. 

H-E-B announces 2023 Excellence in Education Award winners

Congratulations to the statewide winners of the annual H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards! During the awards ceremony, $430,000 in cash awards and grants were given out to the winners. Northside ISD was named the top school board in the state. The school district award winners were Corsicana ISD (small) and Corpus Christi (large). See the full list of award recipients.
