State finalists named for 2022 Superintendent of the Year

TASB has announced the five finalists for Superintendent of the Year: Jenny McGown, Klein ISD, Region 4; Thurston Lamb, Henderson ISD, Region 7; Bobby Ott, Temple ISD, Region 12; Doug Killian, Pflugerville ISD, Region 13; and Scott Muri, Ector County ISD, Region 18. The five finalists were selected by a TASB committee made up of school board members who interviewed 20 nominees from every region in the state. The Superintendent of the Year will be named Sept. 24 during the TASA | TASB Convention. Learn more about each finalist

TASB's annual business meeting to be held Sept. 24

The TASA | TASB Convention is right around the corner! The new Policy Online™ is launching tomorrow

TASB Policy Service is launching the updated Policy Online Wednesday, Sept. 14. Policy contacts will receive information about their new login and the URL to access the application. A user guide with videos and step-by-step instructions is available for help during the transition. Policy Service is also hosting sessions at the upcoming txEDCON22, including a live demonstration and Q&A. Visit the Policy Online upgrade page for ongoing updates. 

Safety training for trustees due Sept. 30

All school board members are now required to complete a school safety training. Newly elected board members must complete the training within their first 120 days of service and complete the refresher every two years after. All other trustees need to complete the initial training by Sept. 30 and complete a refresher every two years after. The approved course is free and only available through TEA Learn.

Advocacy 101 course now available

TASB's new Advocacy 101 course provides an overview of how decisions are made about Texas schools and what you can do as a trustee to benefit your school district. Learn more about the legislative process and how to get started advocating ahead of the 2023 legislative session. Complete the course to earn 1.5 hours of continuing education credit. Log in to the Online Learning Center to register.

Register now: TASB Conference for Administrative Professionals

TASB's biannual training for school district administrative assistants will be held Oct. 20-21 in Austin and repeat Feb. 2-3, 2023. Sessions cover a variety of topics, such as legal, policy, personnel, meetings, and communications. Registration and housing are now open for the October and February events. 

HR trainings offered for new, experienced professionals

TASB HR Services is hosting its HR Academy and Advanced HR Seminar Nov. 7–8 in Georgetown. The HR Academy offers training to new and aspiring HR administrators on the functions and critical issues they may face in their jobs. The Advanced HR Seminar is designed for experienced HR professionals, providing the knowledge, methods, and tools to implement processes and strategically navigate new challenges. Learn more and register

Fund announces award recipients

Seven TASB Risk Management Fund members were recently honored for their successful risk management initiatives. The 2022 Excellence Award recipients are Fort Bend ISD, Klein ISD, Lovejoy ISD, Lyford CISD, Mission CISD, Sabinal ISD, and Thrall ISD. Their accomplishments are celebrated with a custom-designed award for display at their campuses and a $1,000 honorarium they can apply toward risk management programs. Throughout the 2022-23 year, TASB and the Fund will highlight these risk management success stories in various publications.

MASBA Conference registration open

The Mexican American School Boards Association (MASBA) Annual Conference is scheduled for Oct. 6-8 in San Antonio. The event schedule includes a tour of best practices, fireside chats, keynotes, a gala, and more. Registration is open.

Poll: Americans rate local schools high

The latest PDK annual poll on attitudes toward public schools shows a conflicted view. Americans rate their local schools higher than they have for the last 48 years and have trust and confidence in teachers. At the same time, fewer than ever said they would want their child to work as a teacher. H-E-B education awards nominations open

H-E-B is now accepting nominations for the 2023 Excellence in Education Awards in the categories of school board, school district, teacher, principal, and early childhood facility. The awards honor outstanding public education professionals and thank them for their dedication and commitment. Applications and nominations are now open
