Have a say in TASB’s advocacy plan

Texas school board members will gather in San Antonio Sept. 24 for Delegate Assembly, where they'll finalize TASB's Advocacy Agenda, the action plan we use to advocate on behalf of public schools at the Capitol. This year, delegates have a chance to win student scholarships for their districts. Ten $1,000 scholarships are being provided by the TASB Risk Management Fund, TASB Energy Cooperative, and BuyBoard. Learn more about what to expect at Delegate Assembly

See you at SLI!

TASB's Summer Leadership Institute (SLI) is just around the corner! The conference takes place June 15-18 in San Antonio and June 29-July 2 in Fort Worth. There's still time to register. If you've already registered, view the conference program to get a head start in planning your schedule.

School safety resources available to all Texas districts

Deadline approaching for TASB Board nominations

June 30 is the deadline for local school boards to nominate a trustee for one of the 18 open Director positions. The endorsement process runs July 3-August 29. During this time, local boards may endorse the candidacy of a nominated individual from another board in their region. See the open positions.

Take the free Texas school board self-assessment

School boards across Texas have a new way to help determine their areas of strength and opportunities for growth with the release of a revamped assessment tool that TASB is making available to all members. The new Texas School Board Self-Assessment aligns with the State Board of Education’s Framework for School Board Development, which requires school boards to annually assess their “development needs both as a corporate body and as individuals.” Read more

New required school safety training available

In April, the State Board of Education (SBOE) adopted the rule on school safety training required for school board members. New board members are required to get this training within their first 120 days of service and the refresher every two years after. Experienced trustees need to complete the initial training by September 30 and complete a refresher every two years after. The approved course is available at TEA Learn.

Applications open for yearlong trustee training program

Are you looking to develop new skills, connect with other board members, and ultimately become a better leader? TASB is accepting applications through July 1 for the 2022-23 Leadership TASB (LTASB) class. LTASB is the training program that helps experienced school board members level up their leadership skills. Board officers have a pathway to success

A Journey to Excellence: Board Officers’ Academy Remote Coaching is the most comprehensive program for school board officers in Texas. After completing this six-week program, you will understand the role of a board officer, how to run an effective meeting, how to successfully work with different personality types, and how to provide useful feedback to other board members. Three hours of one-on-one coaching about a variety of governance topics is included in the program. The next cohort kicks off July 11. Learn more about the course.

Heroes for Children recognizes public school volunteers

The State Board of Education Heroes for Children award program recognizes excellence in education advocacy and highlights the many volunteers who contribute to public schools. Any Texas resident who gives time, effort, service, and support to public schools and students, except for elected officials and educational employees, can be nominated for the Heroes for Children award. Nominations are open through July 15.
