June 15 deadline to submit Advocacy Resolutions

Development of the 2022-24 TASB Advocacy Agenda kicked off with the Grassroots Meetings held January-March. Now, the Legislative Advisory Council is tasked with developing the statewide Advocacy Priorities, and local school boards are turning their focus toward preparing resolutions. "It’s essential that boards speak up by submitting resolutions and sharing what issues they are passionate about right now,” said Kevin Carbó, Mesquite ISD trustee. Top issues facing Texas public schools right now

There are more than 1,000 school districts in Texas and no two districts are the same. An urban district with 10s of thousands of students has a different set of challenges than a rural one that serves only a few dozen. And yet, the leaders of these districts often find that they have a lot in common. The public education concerns that are most top of mind for school leaders now include teacher recruitment and retention, mental health, and vouchers. TASB needs your input!

It’s time for you to let us know how we are doing! The 2022 TASB Member Survey launches next week. Board members, superintendents, and ESC executive directors: Watch your email on April 19 for the survey link. We encourage all members to complete the survey so the Association can best meet your needs. Deadline for responses is May 6. For more information, contact TASB Planning and Research at planningandresearch@tasb.org.

Spring Workshops bring training to you

Earn the continuing education credit you need close to home and network with school board members from your area during TASB's annual Spring Workshops. Each year, TASB partners with education service centers, colleges, and area school board associations to present training in your local area. Session topics are selected by local school board members. See the schedule to find the Spring Workshop closest to you

Start new board members off on the right track

Some districts will be getting new members on their boards in a few weeks. Help new trustees build a strong foundation. A good place start is the article New School Board Member: What's Next?, as well as the New Board Member Launch training. TASB is also hosting a free webinar May 25, Quick Tips for New Board Members, and registration is now open.

Training for new board officers

With May elections happening next month, it will also be time to hold officer elections. Get up to speed on how to properly conduct the elections by reading TASB's Q&A on Electing School Board Officers. Once officers are elected, they'll want to review Board Officers (Taking on a Board Officer Role). Additionally, TASB is hosting the Getting Started as a Board Officer webinar June 8.

SLI registration, housing opening soon

Whether you’re a new or experienced trustee, Summer Leadership Institute (SLI) offers you the information you need to successfully lead and advocate for your students and community. “We consider it a learning laboratory, where board members can create their own learning journey,” said Kathy Dundee, event organizer. SLI will take place in San Antonio June 15-18 and in Fort Worth June 29-July 2. Registration and housing open April 26. Here's what to expect at the conference.

Nominations open for School Board Awards

Texas superintendents can nominate their board of trustees for the Texas Association of School Administrators' (TASA) School Board Awards. Nominations should be submitted to regional education service centers by June 1. ESCs submit regional winners to TASA, which narrows the entries to five Honor Boards. In the fall, the 2022 Outstanding School Board will be named during txEDCON22. See the award criteria and guidelines
