Plainview ISD leader is 2021 Superintendent of the Year

H.T. Sanchez, superintendent of Plainview ISD, was announced as the winner of the 2021 Superintendent of the Year award during the recent TASA | TASB Convention in Dallas. Sanchez has led the district since May 2018, serving 4,843 students. In nominating him, Plainview ISD Board President Sylvia De La Garza noted his work in passing a $76.6 million bond package, recruiting and retention efforts, advancements in technology, and moving the district forward. The 10-member selection committee commended Sanchez's collaborative leadership style, unwavering focus on student outcomes, and ability to connect with teachers and staff. Delegates take action at annual meeting

The TASB Delegate Assembly met September 25 during the TASA | TASB Convention. TASB officers were chosen and TASB director elections were held, filling 21 positions on the Board. During the annual business meeting, delegates also adopted changes to the TASB Articles of Incorporation, TASB Bylaws, TASB Statement of Beliefs, and the 2020-22 Advocacy Agenda. Executive Director Dan Troxell presented the annual Report on the Association, which highlighted member benefits and activities of the previous year.

TASA announces Aledo ISD as 2021 Outstanding School Board

The Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) named the Aledo ISD Board of Trustees as the 2021 Outstanding School Board. Chosen from five state finalists, the selection committee was impressed by the board’s heavy emphasis on student learning and academic achievement, its work to earn trust within the community, and its ability to manage change. “They are able to speak with tremendous specificity as to what excellent teaching and learning looks like in their classrooms,” the committee said. Start planning now for School Board Recognition Month

January is School Board Recognition Month! The theme for 2022 is "Rising Above," which was chosen as many school boards face more challenges than ever. TASB Executive Director Dan Troxell said that with all the headlines, it would be easy to get the wrong impression of what school boards actually do. “Here at TASB, we want to bring the focus back to the key work of school board members, who are elected to help their districts establish a strategic plan, create budgets, and select and evaluate their superintendent.” TASB’s School Board Recognition Month planning kit for districts will include sample news releases, social media graphics, and more. The toolkit will be available in the coming weeks.

Present at Governance Camp

If your board has something interesting to share or your district pioneers innovative programs, we want to hear about your success! Session proposals are now open for TASB's Governance Camp: Powered by Student Voice, taking place in Galveston March 2-5, 2022. One of the highlights of the event is that trustees get to hear firsthand from students about their experiences. View Governance Camp deadlines and details

How to do superintendent evaluations

One of the big responsibilities your school board has each year — and it’s required by Texas law — is to evaluate your superintendent’s performance. The appraisal isn’t a one-time annual obligation — it should be thought of as the culmination of a year-long cycle. The key to success is to treat the evaluation of the superintendent as an extension of the district’s planning process. Read more about the three-step process your board should follow

Advocacy Game opens, Fisher named Advocate of the Year

Tracy Fisher, trustee on the Coppell ISD Board, was named TASB's first-ever Advocate of the Year last month at the TASA | TASB Convention. During the 2021 legislative session, she testified before the State Board of Education and in committees of the Texas Legislature and rallied dozens of school leaders to get involved in advocating for public schools. Almost 500 board members competed to be Advocate of the Year. Trustees earned points in TASB’s Legislative Advocacy Game by logging their advocacy activities. The game just restarted for 2021-22, so start playing now!

Training for HR professionals next month

Election Day is November 2

Early voting for the November 2 election is October 18-29. Make sure you're registered to vote, and vote in every election. Encourage your friends, family, and colleagues to vote. TASB Legal Services' Student Participation in Elections memo discusses educating students about voting, providing opportunities for students to serve as election clerks, and requirements for high school principals to serve as high school deputy registrars.
