TASB Board nomination deadline approaching

There’s still time for school boards to nominate a local trustee for a position on the TASB Board of Directors. District superintendents and board presidents received official notification in late April of TASB Board vacancies or expiring terms for their regions. This year, there are 12 positions open for election. Apply: Leadership program for experienced trustees

School board members interested in further developing their leadership skills are invited to apply for the 2020-21 Leadership TASB class. The yearlong training helps experienced school board members build relationships, discover solutions for today's education issues, and learn how to address future challenges. Read more

It is more important than ever for Texas trustees to stand up and advocate for public schools. There’s no question that the COVID-19 pandemic will take a toll on the state’s budget, which leaves educators with unanswered questions as to how that will affect the gains made by House Bill 3. Legal resources: Academic calendars, elections

TASB Legal Services’ new memo, Changing the Academic Calendar in Light of COVID-19 (pdf), provides information on options for changing district calendars to expand instructional time due to the pandemic. Notice of Candidate Filing Period for November 3, 2020 Election (pdf) advises districts of the requirement to notify the public of the filing period for running for school board. The deadline to post this notice is June 18.

Save the date for txEDCON2020, the TASA | TASB Convention, scheduled for October 2–4 in Dallas. While there are no plans to postpone, reschedule, or cancel txEDCON2020, the health and safety of our members and attendees is our highest priority. Read more

Nominations open for school volunteer award

Thousands of Texans across the state spend their time volunteering in public schools. Recognize the contributions of local volunteers by nominating them for the State Board of Education’s Heroes for Children Award. Nominations are being accepted through July 1.
