Candidate endorsements for the TASB Board of Directors are being accepted through August 29. Local board action is required to endorse a nominated individual from another board in the region. Check the list of candidates to see if a TASB director position is open in your region.

Deadline for superintendent salary survey next week

The deadline to participate in the 2018–19 superintendent salary survey, conducted by TASB HR Services, is August 20. Superintendents and HR Services program contacts are encouraged to complete the online survey using the log-in instructions that were e-mailed. A PDF version also is available. District personnel and community college salary surveys open next month, and the extra-duty stipend survey begins in October. Find out how your district benefits from participation. Questions? Apply for a stipend to attend national advocacy event

The National School Boards Association (NSBA) Advocacy Institute is an opportunity for Texas trustees to advocate for their district with Congress and the White House. The annual event will take place February 2–4, 2020 in Washington, DC. Once again, TASB is offering a stipend for school board members interested in attending. Read more.

Cosponsored by TASB HR Services and the Texas Association of School Personnel Administrators (TASPA), the seminar is the premier training for new and aspiring human resources administrators. Training for district administrative staff coming soon

Registration for the TASB Conference for Administrative Professionals, scheduled for October 24–25 in Austin, opens August 21. The conference, which provides training and networking opportunities for administrative support professionals, is held each October and repeats the following February, so attendees can choose the most convenient date. Congratulations to the Honor Boards!

The Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) has announced the five finalists for its 2019 School Board Awards: Frenship ISD, Harlingen CISD, Pasadena ISD, Rockwall ISD, and Tyler ISD. Read more about why each board was chosen. The finalists will be interviewed during the TASA | TASB Convention in Dallas, where one will be named the 2019 Outstanding School Board on September 20. 

H-E-B CEO named 2019 Key Communicator 

Charles C. Butt, chairman and CEO of H-E-B, has been selected as the recipient of the 2019 Key Communicator Award by the Texas School Public Relations Association (TSPRA). TSPRA cited his efforts to enhance the academic experience of thousands of Texas students, teachers, administrators, school boards, and districts as the reason for his selection. Read more.

Preliminary financial ratings posted

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) recently released preliminary financial accountability ratings for school districts and charters across the state, with 87 percent earning the highest preliminary rating possible for 2018–19. Districts wishing to appeal ratings must submit a written appeal with supporting evidence to the Texas Education Agency's Financial Accountability Division by September 10. Final ratings will be released in October.

Budget Cohort for Texas school leaders

TASB has partnered with the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) and the Texas Association of School Business Officials (TASBO) to present the Budget Cohort for Texas District Leaders. The training will focus on the comprehensive budget planning process, with emphasis on active collaboration among all departments. Read more.

PDK Poll shows trends in teacher pay, education funding

The annual PDK Poll of the public’s attitudes toward public schools shows a mixed bag of results when it comes to teacher pay, funding for schools, and overall satisfaction with public education. For the 18th straight year, lack of funding was cited as the biggest problem in public schools. Read more.
