XG Summit Speakers

Charles R. Martinez, Jr., Ph.D.

Charles R. Martinez, Jr., Ph.D. is the 12th dean of the College of Education at The University of Texas at Austin. He is a professor in the Department of Educational Psychology. Martinez has led numerous research projects examining risk and protective factors involved in linking social and cultural factors to education and behavioral health disparities for Latino children and families. His work has garnered grants totaling more than $35 million. Previously, Martinez was the Philip H. Knight Professor in the Department of Educational Methodology, Policy, and Leadership at the University of Oregon, where he also founded the Center for Equity Promotion. Also, he served on the Eugene School Board and was a governor-appointed member of the Oregon State Board of Education from 2013 to 2018.

Meredith Mountford

Meredith MountfordMeredith Mountford, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor at Florida Atlantic University in the Department of Educational Leadership and Research Methodology. She is also the Director of the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA)’s Center for Research on District Governance as well as Past-President of the American Educational Research Association (AERA)s Research on the Superintendency SIG. Dr. Mountford researches school boards, superintendents, educational policy, and gender. She has multiple publications in these areas as well as research on educational leadership preparation programs. Meredith consults with school board/superintendent teams all over the country on how to flatten team hierarchies and lessen the burden and of power and ego around superintendent and school board decision-making dynamics. She spent over 15 years in school districts in Wisconsin as a teacher, principal, and a district superintendent.

William P. McCaw (EdD)

McCawWilliam has been a public school educator since 1979. His experience includes 20 years in P-12 education as a teacher, principal, and central office administrator. In 1999, Bill transitioned to the University of Montana in Missoula and is currently a professor in the Department of Educational Leadership, where he works with principal, superintendent, and doctoral candidates. His research focus has been shaped by serving as a chair or committee member on 83 doctoral disser­tations. Dr. McCaw’s research focus is examining the roles and relationships between school leaders and followers as well as the development of personal and organizational environments conducive to optimal performance. Bill has considerable experience in the theoretical and practical aspects of education reform, specifically in the areas of curriculum, super­vision, assessment, and boardsmanship. His work influences leadership policy at the state, national, and international levels.

David Lee (EdD)

LeeDr. Lee is Associate Professor of Educational Leadership at The University of Southern Mississippi. He has served as a teacher, principal, superintendent, deputy state superintendent of education for the State of Louisiana, college professor, and local school board member and has consulted with school systems and Fortune 500 companies all over the world. He has over 35 years of experience driving change in organizations and providing the motivation that enables people to be better at what they do. David is the author of three books and he publishes articles in leading industry journals. His latest is An Emerging Model of Board Development: Behavioral Governance, to be published by the National School Boards Association. He has developed a national school board training model based on his ground-breaking research linking school board behaviors with student achievement.

Ivan J. Lorentzen (EdD)

LorentzenIvan retired in 2016 after spending 45 years as Pro­fessor of Psychology at Flathead Valley Community College in Kalispell, Montana. He served in elected positions on local elementary and high school boards for 20 years in the Flathead Valley. He earned The Eagle Award at FVCC as outstanding college faculty member in 2002, was presented with the Marvin Heintz Award for Outstanding Achieve­ment as a School Trustee in Montana in 2010, and was recognized nationally by the American Com­munity College Trustees (ACCT) as the Outstanding Faculty Member for the Western Region in 2012. In 2013, he completed a study in Montana on the rela­tionship between effective boardsmanship and stu­dent achievement. He lives on the family farm in the Flathead Valley, where he raises wheat, barley, and hay with his wife Connie, a retired microbiologist.

Bobby Blount (JD)

BlountBobby Blount manages engineers and oversees projects finding solutions to cyber and security challenges as a Department Head for the MITRE Corporation Department of Defense Federally Funded Research and Development Center. He currently serves as president of the Bexar County School Boards Coalition and is on the steering committee for Go Public, focused on promoting public schools in San Antonio. Additionally, he has been a trustee at Northside ISD for nearly 20 years, is a part of the executive committee for the Texas Caucus of Black School Board Members, and also serves on the Northside Education Foundation Grants Committee. Bobby is a strong proponent of public education, and he will share advice and proven practices on improving school board governance to increase student achievement. Bobby and his wife, Sandra, have two children, Robbie, a recent Stanford graduate, and Jaelynn, currently studying at the University of Texas. Bobby coaches three soccer teams in his spare time.

Drs. Danielle and Daniel Eadens

Dr. Daniel Eadens is an Associate Professor of Educational Leadership and College of Education’s Study Abroad Coordinator at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. Most recently, he served as Assistant Department Chair, Vice President of the Faculty Senate, and Executive Board Secretary on the National Council of Professors of Educational Administration. He enjoys teaching Critical Issues in Education, Higher Education Finance, and Education Funding Policy Studies for Masters and Doctoral candidates. Early career, during his first year of K12 teaching he was named ‘Runner-Up Teacher of the Year’.

His wife, Dr. Danielle Eadens is an Associate Professor of Practice at Northern Arizona University. At Northern Arizona University, she serves as the coordinator of the dual major (Special Education & Elementary Education) Praxis program, a director on the Commission on Disability Access and Design committee, as a member and former co-chair of the College of Education's International Student Teaching Committee, the Doctoral Admissions and Doctoral Steering committees, and as a member on doctoral dissertation committees. In addition to working on college and University initiatives, she works with the Flagstaff Unified School District.

Together they have co-authored 12 publications and have presented at dozens of conferences. They continue to conduct research focused on critical issues in education including social justice, disability perceptions, gun violence in schools, and school boards. Outside of work, they stay busy parenting three boys, two of which still live at home, and have the joy of serving as licensed foster parents.
