TASB eXceptional Governance Board Development

XG LogoTASB is pleased to offer eXceptional Governance (XG) Board Development. This five-session, whole-board learning experience helps boards build skills shown to support improved student learning. This program will help your board:

  • Commit to a shared vision with high expectations for students and staff
  • Focus on understanding data to monitor and make governance decisions
  • Apply a goal-monitoring system to improve focus
  • Share a common understanding of and commitment to ongoing improvement
  • Develop common messages that support relentless focus on student learning outcomes
  • Communicate the goals and expectations for the board and district with the community

The five sessions are as follows:

1. What’s at stake: Setting a vision for opportunity and achievement

Lays a foundation for the series by identifying what is at stake for students, the district, the board, and public education as a whole. Participants will commit to a shared vision emphasizing high expectations for students, staff, and the board.

2. Essential levers: Key elements of improved learning and teaching

Builds on the vision and shares research-supported levers for improved learning and teaching in your district. Participants focus on the governance role the board plays in supporting improvements made in the classroom.

3. Taking stock: Where are we now and where are we going?

Equips trustees to understand the current state of student achievement in the district and set specific learning outcome goals for the system. The board focuses on understanding and applying data to monitor and make decisions at the governance level.

4. Structuring for success: How will we know when we get there?

Helps trustees build a sustainable goal-monitoring structure that ensures a tight focus on student learning and accountability for results. Participants practice observing and interrogating data, asking informed questions, and assessing improvement.

5. Oversight for excellence: The ongoing role and work of the board

Ensures trustees have the essential skills to sustain the work of the board, focused on the district vision for improving learning and teaching. This includes the ability to apply the goal monitoring system, share a common understanding of and commitment to ongoing improvement, and develop common messages that support a relentless focus on student learning outcomes.

These sessions and their outcomes equip boards to enter a process for continuous improvement. This could require follow-up sessions, quarterly or semiannually for ongoing refinement.
