Qualifications & Characteristics
In concert with the staff, parents, students, and community, the Board of Trustees has identified certain qualifications and characteristics as highly desirable in a superintendent:
Is an effective communicator with superior interpersonal skills who can make and defend difficult decisions that are best for students
Is a motivational, visionary leader with the ability to build broad consensus in support of district goals and plan strategically to ensure the development of education programs and the effective use of the district's facilities, resources, and personnel
Demonstrates a successful record of fiscal planning, budget management, projecting future needs, and managing building programs
Is student orientated, clearly understands how the learning/teaching process best functions, and shows clear evidence of raising achievement levels
Is able to show evidence of effective community involvement in their schools
Can effectively delegate and empower staff members to carry out their responsibilities while remaining knowledgeable and accountable for the district's overall progress in carrying out its mission
Understands the importance and reality of the classroom teaching environment and be committed to supporting classroom teachers and boosting their morale in every way possible
Is skilled in team building
Understands the value and importance of diversity and demonstrates success in working with a population and culture similar to Mercedes
Is able to work in partnership with a Board of Trustees; provide timely and accurate information about the district; present sound recommendations for action; and build a climate of candor, mutual trust, and cooperation
Has a broad spectrum of successful experience as both a teacher and administrator
Is visible and approachable and exemplifies high moral standards and personal ethics with a background of complete integrity
Mission
It is the mission of the Mercedes Independent School District to assure that each child is prepared to graduate...fully prepared to enter any major university or college of his or her choice.
About Us
The Community
Mercedes is located in the Southeast corner of Hidalgo County between two airports served by major airlines. Excellent care facilities are readily accessible. The subtropical climate attracts winter residents from all parts of the United States. Mercedes is only 30 minutes from UT-Pan American, which offers numerous undergraduate and graduate degrees and various types of educational certifications.
Mercedes is only 10 minutes away from the Mexico border and less than an hour away from South Padre Island. The relatively low cost of living, churches, parks, central location, traditional values, and strong community support of its schools makes Mercedes an excellent place to raise a family.
