    About Us

The history of Lovejoy is a tribute to the citizens of the community who, for more than a century, have met the good times and bad times with a resolve that is characteristic of the frontier spirit. With pride, Lovejoy traces its roots to 1864, an era prior to public education in the state of Texas.

In 1864, a private school called Willow Springs opened and in 1884, it became the public Lucas School. The Forest Grove School was established in July, 1884, and a third school, the Lick Springs School, was established at an early date and was located north of the present Lovejoy School.

On July 2, 1917, the Lovejoy Common School District, Number 32, was established with the consolidation of the Forest Grove and Lick Springs schools. The present wood-frame "red schoolhouse" is the original building, with several remodelings.

In the late 1950's, early 1960's the number of schoolchildren in many of the rural schools diminished and many schools had to close. The Lucas School closed due to low enrollment. Lovejoy was also in danger of closing due to a fluctuating enrollment. In 1963 the Lucas School consolidated with Lovejoy increasing the Lovejoy Common School district to 17 square miles. In September, 1978, the state Legislature abolished all common school districts and Lovejoy became an independent school district.

The Lovejoy Independent School District is located on Country Club Road, three miles east of Allen and about 25 miles north of Dallas, in the fast developing region of central Collin County. The district covers an area of approximately 19 square miles. Boundary school districts include Plano ISD on the south, Allen ISD on the west, and McKinney ISD on the north. Approximately 90 percent of homes in this bedroom community are on one- to two-acre home-sites.

Lovejoy ISD is currently a K-6 district and is responsible for the education of 1,130 students in two elementary schools, and 1,016 secondary students attending Allen ISD under a tuition agreement. In the fall of 2006, Lovejoy ISD will open its first high school with a 3A classification. The 1,000 student capacity building is well on the way to completion. The district plans to open a middle school and a third elementary in 2008.

Since 1917, Lovejoy ISD has served the residents of Fairview, Lucas, and other surrounding neighborhoods in an area of natural beauty, rural atmosphere, country hospitality and traditional values. Lovejoy ISD is fully accredited by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and it is the goal of the Board of Trustees and administration to continue to strengthen programs and expand educational opportunities for all students. Lovejoy ISD has been honored as exemplary by TEA since the ratings began, and in 2003-04 was the only exemplary district in Collin County.

Lovejoy ISD is a member of the Collin County Special Education Cooperative.
